For over a year now, I have been trying to build a head-unit with CarPlay for my motorcycle after my phone fell off the holder... twice.
For my previous bike I had a semi-working wireless CarPlay build hooked up to an Android TV box under the seat. Unfortunately the ATV box didn't have Bluetooth I only had music streaming on my phone but no GPS instructions.
Now that I've upgraded my bike I thought about making an SBC based unit. I've gone as far as a TinkerBoard based build but now that I've seen that OAP has recently supported CarPlay with the Carlinkit dongle I am now thinking about switching over to OAP.
This is my proposed bare minimum set up so far:
- RPi Model 4b 4GB (is 2GB enough?)
- This touch screen - Because this is going to be outside I need a 1000+ nit display therefore the RPI display is no good [obtained]
- Carlinkit 2.0 adapter [obtained]
- CSR 4.0 BT adapter
- UPS/PSU - Need something that's programmable so that if ignition is off for <2 hours/etc the Pi stays on but the screen stays off so that I don't have to spend 2 minutes for it to boot up again
- Custom made handlebar buttons using a Teensy LC [obtained]
- Audio device - Cardo Packtalk Bold (Bluetooth) [obtained]
- Once I get the thing working on bench I will DIY the case
I've had a look into it and I have a few questions:
- Obviously the most important thing is that the audio gets streamed to the headset in my helmet. I do not care about calls, I just want to listen to music and receive instructions from GPS. Would I be able to do that and will I still need a DAC seeing as it's not going to be plugged into anything at all?
- How much of the UI will I be able to customise? I know I can change the splash screen already but can I change the font/colours/etc?
- Can I disable/remove the OBD-related information?
Thanks
