Something better than Navit - raenrfm - 04-29-2019

Any thoughts on developing a navigation software that's better than Navit? It's so slow and the UI is not very friendly. I know it's more about the android auto thing, but I will be trying to cut the cord to google soon.

+1 I am trying to find a better solution for GPS mapping too. I have been working on Waze from https://github.com/sashakh/waze but I am not a programmer and there multiple errors.

What applications are people using for navigation that does not require using android auto.

I am just wondering what you don't like about google maps? Is it the tracking thing? They have a incognito for maps now. Just wondering why this don't work for some of you? I can understand not wanting to use google, due to privacy, but they give the most open ways to see what info they keep and give the option to delete it.

Sorry if I am coming off pro google, but the features they give me are better then most other apps compared.

We also thing that google maps, for now, are the best on the market.

If you do not want to use them, try to install Waze app in AA.

I have an iPhone so no android auto. What do you mean google maps? There is a google maps app that will work on Raspbian?

Bump...

Is everything recommended above for Android auto only? Since I am using an iPhone I need something non AA dependent.

Re: Something better than Navit - BlueWave - 06-12-2019

Nope, nothing better than AA.

In the future we plan to investigate possibility to have CarPlay, but for know it only a plan.

Edit: just an idea. There is a Waze available for RPI. We did not check it, but maybe you can do some research.

RE: Something better than Navit - stefi - 06-20-2019

Waze will install on the R PI 3 but fails to update maps and the github version is always broken, i use wazes through AA although would be better if it could be installed or added to the OA image, Google maps tracks the user so i avoid google as much as possible, navit is junk so kind of stuck on choice, i ended up buying an android phone and only have waze installed just so i could use it on OA but prefere to have no phone connected at all so i could just switch on the ignition and OA just loads without the extra bs.
i even posted many times in the waze forums for a request to add raspberry pi support along with many other users adding their comments for it to be added but waze just ignored all request.

Waze shares data with Google Maps now, and if you've ever done map editing in Waze you know Google is already using where you've driven to as a basis for what you are allowed to edit. Or in other words, Waze is tracking you at least as much as Google Maps is.

That said, I'm pretty sure the previously published GPL source for Waze has been abandoned since Google bought them, as the code hasn't been publicly updated in 7 years.
