What exactly is the temperature sensor used for? Can existing (OBD) sensors be used as temperature input?

I'm just a noob when it comes to Linux, usually I would have to rely on a step-by-step description in order to manage this.
The examples listed in GitHub unfortunately did not leave me any wiser either...
