Obd feature questions - Wynand - 07-30-2020

Hi, your OBD gauges development cant wait for the release, but will one be able to change the position of the gauges and the graphics of the gauge, change the look of the gauges, like make our own gauges, and will we able to do custom PID's

Yes, configuration of custom PIDs will be possible. It will be also possible to define custom dashboards of two types (sport and detailed). You can configure what PIDs will be visible on the dashboard and what will be the order. So far we do not provide any customizations of gauges appearance but those for day/night switching.

And I will jump also here with the question,

Whether it will be possible to integrate gauges dashboard with Pi boards connected to car CAN line directly? Is there any technical limitation and we are forced to use ELM chips with some OBD Bluetooth dongles?

Can bus is kind of interface, like Ethernet, UART, etc. Obd is a protocol - higher layer. There are several variants of Obd protocol and implementing them is huge effort. ELM327 provides abstraction layer independent on car and chosen Obd standard. You talk with Elm327 the same way no matter what car is actually connected. Currently we do not have plans to implement Obd protocol standards directly in OpenAuto Pro. We prefer stick to the Elm327.

Ok, with which ELM327 device are you testing / developing? For which one we should look?

We support ELM327 over USB or Bluetooth. We really encourage to buy genuine device (with firmware 2.0 or higher) - it really improves overall speed of the PIDs querying.
