Safe shut down powersupply - Wynand - 01-23-2020

Hi here is my power shutdown and power up, that i am busy experimenting with. It is based on the the shut down using one relay and a timer, as on the forum. i will be running that script once installed to see if it will work. It will supply power from the ignition of the vehicle to the timer and the trigger of the timer. once activated the timer relay will energize supplying 12 V to the 12v to 5V converter, which in return will power the RPI. The relay will also be energize, once the ignition is switched of the power to the trigger will be cut but as the timers relay is energized it will still supply power to the time until the count down stops and the relay is de-energized. I have added to diodes for current feed back so that the trigger isnt trigger again when the ignition is switched of.

Hope full it will work, still have to finish building it and then testing it before final installation.

Any feedback would be appreciate.

Hi. so this weekend I started to build the gracefull shutdown powersupply as mentioned on the forum using 1 Relay and a digital timer. do to the costs of the timer her in South Africa i opted for a digital 12 volt timer relay, and used some diodes to keep the timer energizend and to be shut down completly until power form the ignition is applied to it.

So I built the circuit with the relay as in my drawing and tested it this afternoon with the script that is used on the forum. I have not yet connected the 12 Volt to 5 Volt converter, but tested the shutdown of the PI with the setup. i adjusted the time delay in the script to 10 seconds and the timer delay to about 30 seconds. As in the video, when the ignition is switch on the PI starts up, as soon as the ignition is switched of the relay short the GPIO 17 to Ground, after 10 seconds the screen goes blank and after a few more seconds the green light of the PI stops flashing indicating that it is switched off.

Now I have to mount everything re-install it in the car and the start with the software to mirror on the phone.

I was looking for a 'Safe shutdown' solution a long time.
Your solution seems to be the easiest to come by so I might be using your solution.

Is it posible to get the script u using for reading the values from GPIO 17 ?

@Wyland this looks great! I am going to try it out myself. Can you please verify the parts list I have? I am having difficulty finding the right diodes.
