Revers camera - types, issues. - Daniel_BlueWave - 08-05-2019

We would like to ask what kind of revers camera device would you recommend? We are looking for USB camera solution.

One proposal from @frankpintosr setup:

RE: Revers camera - which one? - jennmike2 - 08-06-2019

This is the one I bought but haven't been able to get it to work. I have bought many RCA to USB adapters but yet to make them work.

Figured i would clarify, I have had the camera working just not with an adapter or pi. I checked it working with an old VCR

RE: Revers camera - which one? - stefi - 08-06-2019

here is mine but again i have no idea what rca to usb to use but its more or less the same as the above two but does not need a lead inbetween the camera and the raspberry as its wireless

and there is a conversion kit that converts wired to wireless too

maybe a raspberry pi compatible capture card would work

or...  although seems a pointless is to go from the camera to a rca to hdmi convertor and then using the below link to connect straight to the pi camera port

@stefi, @jennmike2 What is your impression about our support of camera in OAP?

since many people have different cameras, they seem to have mainly two different types, usb and the raspberrys onboard camera port which can be used via HDMI cable through two adapters (link in my original post, above) personly i would add two options in the main config menu to select one of each, then as far as i can see that pretty much covers most cameras since the usb ones with or without the use of GPIO are covered, the option of using the on screen distance graph is a great idea since some cameras have it built in (including mine) and others dont plus you have the option for resolution and brightness, apart from that i would say your adition was a sucsess and nothing really can improve it apart from future bugs, updates or changes that cant be helped, maybe it is now  time to move on to ODB which is much needed by many but to that add the codes section like is used on many android apps such as torque, all in all it is very impressive and OAP itself is hard to beat and a joy to use. thats my opion as asked for and thank you for asking, hope this helps in some way  Smile

also to add, for anyone that wants to use a dash cam on top of reversing camera, get a frigen go-pro or go-pro clone and sit it on the dash haha

@stefi thank you for your feedback.
In our current solution there is no need to configure USB or RPi camera - default one will work as soon as it is connected. In case you are using two interfaces in your project, you are able to chose one for rear view in OAP directly.

fyi the OBD is almost done.

I order this USB camera: MagiDeal Auto Rückfahrkamera Rückfahrsystem mit 120 Winkel Farbweitwinkelobjektiv, Infrarot-LED Nachtsicht HD, Wasserdicht mit 1m USB Kabel https://www.amazon.de/dp/B072QZCH4J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iyBwDbTTBHA6J

and also this USB cable with repeater: Rhombutech® 10 Meter USB 2.0 Verlängerung, Aktiv, Repeater, Verlängerungskabel, doppelt geschirmt, vergoldete Kontakte (AF-10 Meter) https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07DPNJ416/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_zyBwDbHC41JJE

I don't know if this setup will worked. The USB cable is already in place. Only need to wait for the camera to arrive.

So it is possible 2 have 2 cameras connected? Or am I seeing this wrong? ?

RE: Revers camera - which one? - jennmike2 - 08-19-2019

Sorry, I have not tried beta B yet. I received part A and ran into a hiccup with the screen booting black. I remember seeing the post about this issue but I haven 't had time to mess with it. I will be able to fill in more info when I get time to experiment. I have received the RPI Cam to HDMI boards to convert this when I put it in the truck. I have the other cam that I mentioned above. But I didn't know what USB adapt. to use. The one I bought, I haven't been able to get it to work, even on my win 10 desktop

RE: Revers camera - which one? - Frank - 08-31-2019

I'm stuck too. If using a pi compatible csi-hdmi camera module, i have found no waterproof case to mount it in for a reverse cam. If i go with any of the popular reverse cams that are waterproof and have night vision, they are RCA. I tried an RCA to HDMI converter. It didnt work either. If you have a reverse cam working, what did you do?

I can confirm this set works. Both the USB camera and USB cable with repeater. In pulse audio I set the configuration of cam to digital and choose 1280*720 pixel for the camera and it works. Although the camera is pretty big I gives nice view. For now I put it in the car to see how the result is in day and night. I have tinted windows. If the result is great I leave it there if not I move it outside. A nice option/update would be that we can mirror the image vertical and horizontal.

Here some pictures
