CarPlay startup

12v power via HifiBerry Aamp 60 hat
HifiBerry sound card hat
CRS4 dongle
Carlinkit Autokit

What’s the trigger when opening Autobox in OAP as CarPlay only starts if I go into Bluetooth on my phone and connect to the Aitokit Bluetooth? 

Should CarPlay start automatically? Is it a iPhone thing or is there a setting in OAP I need to change??

When I open Autobox in OAP it just sits on the WIfi and Information screen. CarPlay only starts up and run in OAP when I open Bluetooth on my iPhone and select the Autokit Bluetooth to connect it. As it connects CarPlay starts on OAP.

Should it not automatically connect when I open Autobox on OAP??

You can try to enable Automic wireless connection in settings.

That’s already setup and my phone auto connects to the Wi-Fi

To make sure, I just tested that on my setup. Pi off, Iphone connected to the Carlinkit (I opted for wired because of reliability and I always plug in for charging anyway), then power up. Goes through my splash screen, to OAP, then automatically into Car Play. Looking at the screen as I write this. If I remember correctly, in the beginning, my phone asked if I wanted to use CarPlay. I simply agreed and that was that. So yes, it connects automatically, you just have to figure out how to enable that on your end. Most likely a phone thing. You'll get it.

Also wanted to add that when first exploring OAP options, I enabled Automatic wireless connection in the Autobox setting, but soon un-ticked that as I was getting Raspi pop up boxes saying it can't establish a connection. This might have something to do with the fact that my Carlinkit adapter is the wired version, but even not selected, my phone is always paired when I boot up, even when not connected to the Carlinkit dongle. Dongle, who came up with that descriptor, lol.

Connecting to the phone and running the CarPlay is done inside the Carlinkit adapter. OpenAuto Pro only communicates with the dongle, not directly with your phone. If automatic connection is enabled in OAP settings, it will ask the dongle to connect to the phone right after startup but it is up to dongle to make the connection. You can use official Carlinkit app and try update the firmware to the newest version.

Fixed it - my phone was still auto connecting to the house Wifi - when out in the car it autoconnects to the wifi and it all works. I changed the ini file also to autoconnect so CarPaly fires up by default now - all good thanks
