I do not see any limitation here.
Have you read the post from the link at all? As long as you know what and how you are doing feel free to use anything you want. It is just our recommendation based on our experience.

To wrap up this post, I’m back on the happy side of OAP after resolving and addressing all of my implementation issues. The power issues I mentioned above were definitely a result of the cheap USB soundcard. The sound issues were the result of several things: 1) obvious to some but this was a new learning for me… don’t trust the sound of your speakers sitting loose on a bench. There is no base and sound is loose and metallic with no base. Speakers sound best when installed with backing to improve the sound. 2) I bought a cheap $25 4 channel Amp and since replaced with a better Panasonic amp that matches nicely with my speakers. I actually don’t think this was the main culprit and may try it again with speakers installed just to see. 3) The UGreen soundcard is probably not as good as the Soundblaster soundcard I ended up with but the main problem I had was the impact on the boot splash loop it caused… If this can be fixed, the sound may not be a big issue.

I’ve since managed to get CarPlay working very well, I have one rotary encoder for volume/mute and another for screen navigation and selection which are both working. I just finalized the connection of a license plate reverse camera triggered by a button (will be triggered by shifting in reverse once installed) to display over OAP/CarPlay. I’ll work on a wiring diagram and pin out so I have everything fully documented in my project (1970 Beetle restoration/mod and Electric conversion).

Would love to have a way to use a joystick or something other than touchscreen to use navigation?

    Kleekru,

could you give us a little more detail on the rotary encoder for volume/mute and for screen navigation/selection? Do you have a build blog anywhere? Where did you mount the encoders and how did you wire them up? I'm right in the middle of a build and am learning as I go.
