Audi RNS-E with touch screen
#1
Hello,

I just installed Open Auto Pro in Audi A3 8P with RNS-E head unit. I managed to install touch screen over original radio display, due to missing CAN communication in current release. I hope it will be possible to create some communication with CAN, I'm open to work together on development.

Pi is hidden under the dashboard connected with RNS-E video interface and additional USB touch screen. For better sound quality i used external sound card and noise filter. I didn't put external BT module, willing to use build in, but I already noticed that it's not working properly. I hope external BT will do it's job. Nevertheless I have original Audi BT Interface so I have hands free phone calls via RNS-E without Open Auto.

Looking forward new features development Smile

My wish list:
I would really like some gauges in Open Auto application, read from CAN communication (i have pican2 board)

Looks awesome! Nice to see another Audi at our forum Smile.

Few suggestions regarding OpenAuto Pro appearance. If you use composite (analog) video output, it might be really useful to play with below parameters to adjust resolution and screen margins (those are from our MMI 2G setup).

Code:
overscan_left=-12
overscan_right=-8
overscan_top=-16
overscan_bottom=-24
framebuffer_width=800
framebuffer_height=480
sdtv_aspect=3

Documentation: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentatio...t/video.md

Also it might be useful hint that height of OpenAuto Pro TopBar depends on height of Raspbian's "Start" panel.

Thank you Smile

I already did screen adjustments, so Open Auto looks good. Thank you for hint about about TopBar, will remember. Generally speaking I already have some experience with Raspbian and CarPi projects, so I feel quite comfortable setting everything up

Also I read some threads and have finger crossed for future development. There are nice ideas!

Hi @peetereczek.

How did you add touchscreen to your RNS-E?
Is it an overlay? And where can i buy this.
I am running an RNS-E with PiCAN2 and only hardware buttons. But i would like to add touch to it also Big Grin

Best regards

I used that screen overlay: https://pl.aliexpress.com/item/327472349...5c0fO4RpNo

Simple 6,5 inch one, from one of the auctions directly from China Wink And I mounted it as and addition layer on RNS-E screen with touch module inside radio, as you can see above only USB is something new from regular RNS-E

I also have PiCAN2 and I'm looking forward gauges dashboard Wink

Hi @peetereczek.

Thank you so much for linking to the screen overlay.
I have been searching for something that would fit the RNS-E screen, but never find one with USB and controller board.
Even the ones i did find was sold for $200 USD. but without controller boards. So a huge thank you for linking to this.

I have made an order now so just waiting a few weeks to receive my touch overlay and then start to disassemble the RNS-E Big Grin

Was the overlay plug and play with the Raspberry or is there some special driver or settings i need to adjust?

Sure, gauges dashboard would be so cool.
I have seen an video on Youtube where you can get info like - Doors open, lights on, etc.

Definitely you will need some calibration for the touch positions, but that's all. Simply P&P

Thanks,

Tak, z Polski Wink Sami twórcy Open Auto też, ale będę pisał po angielsku żeby inni też rozumieli Wink

I fitted touch digitizer without any rework over original screen frame, but it's a bit thicker. Screen is around 1mm and it's visible for me, but some newbie won't notice at all.

Hi All!
That's looking really awesome.

@Peetereczek, how would you rate the quality of this touch overlay? Is it fine enough? I mean the quality and fineness of recognition.
One more question regarding Adapter for RNS-E video input - which one do you use?

Thanks for your answers.
