I added a pi and official touchscreen to my vw.
I wanted to utilise my current rcd300 head unit for sound output, and as a backup for FM radio.
I installed the pi behind the radio (attached to it). I ran a 500mm ribbon and a positive/negative from the gpio pins to the front of the radio, where I mounted the touchscreen.
Audio is taken from the pi's 3.5mm jack to an aux cable for the rcd300 (custom made cable).
The mic is mounted just behind the steering wheel, and I've left my wireless keyboard dongle in the pi in case I need to make any changes.
I bought a drop down voltage reg off Amazon and wired it to a switch in front of my gear stick/selector (so I manually turn on/off the pi)
