This is for my 1984 Camaro, it originally had a 1.5 din size opening. A few years back I converted it to a double din and had a Kenwood stereo installed.
The apps on that deck were outdated, and didn't work with my new phone.
I was originally just going to swap out the deck, but started thinking about how software on these aftermarket decks are obsolete after a few years and then things just stop working and you're forced to buy another one. And these things cost 500+ for nicer ones.
That's when I started researching AA, and came across OpenAuto.
So here are some pics of the progress so far.
This is the Kenwood deck, before I started the project.
I went with a WaveShare 7 inch screen, even though the screen is larger than the kenwood. The overall size is slightly smaller than DoubleDin. So I needed to reduce the opening some.
I used some ABS to reduce the hole size, and then used epoxy/bondo sanded everything so it matched.
After a lot of trial and error, was finally able to get it test fitted into the car
I still need to get this all wired up and actually running in the car. Still have some issues there to figure out.
Overall I like how things have been turning out.
I do wish, there were more screen options out there. I would have preferred one that was a doubledin size, with a bezel to conceal the electronics. That way I wouldn't have had to do any further modifications to the car. The official screen though has way too much bezel, thats why I ended up going with this one.
