Hello
I am in the process of creating my very own head unit for my VW Touareg. It will have a Raspberry pi 4 4gb, 7” touch screen, MINI-DSP to send sound to my amplifier, and steering wheel controllers.
Since VW don’t have 12v ignition signal in their stereo plug, and I had a connects2 adapter laying around I will utilize it. At least for V1 of the project.
I got my hands on a free OEM stereo out of a VW Transporter which I will use as a cabinet for my project. Here is a reference photo:
So far I have started with desoldering the quadlock connector of the PCB of the old stereo.
And I have de-soldered one end of the connects2 adapter and decoded the steering wheel controllers from my car. Using and Arduino as ADC. Might move to a ADC controller for the PI down the line, but for the V1 I just need to get it working. i found out it simulates and "resistive ladder" so it was pretty simple to decode it once i figured out that.
The cable management inside the unit will mostly be done on a custom PCB. The Quadlock, the connects2 and the Arduino wil be mounted right on the PCB. I am also planning to add optocouplers so the arduino(or PI if I go for ADC to the PI) can read off the IGN, ILLUMINATION and REVERSE signal of the Connects2 safely.
For powering the PI I have ordered a mausberry 4 amp switch, but it has not yet been shipped. if anyone have good ideas to power it I am all ears. Since I am making my own PCB I can fit a power supply on the board, and maybe power it through the POE pins?
I am looking forward to feedback and tips on my build.
