First, that 3 pin regulator won't be able to provide the current you're going to need for that screen PLUS the RasPi.(04-06-2020, 09:00 AM)bristol406 Wrote: I'm planning to use a 10.1 inch Sunfounder touch screen as my OAP display. It comes with a 12V mains adapter for home use; I'm wondering if it's okay to power it directly from my car battery which will often be in excess of 12V. I can't find any information on the Sunfounder web site. Anyone seen any info or actually run one in their vehicle ?In case anyone was wondering I found the answer. From the SunFounder website, the screen has an input of 12V, 1.5A, and a USB output of 5V, 3A. So the only thing I would need to connect to the car battery for clean power to a 10.1 in display and a raspberry pi 4, is a voltage regulator to get power to the screen, and a USB to USB-C cable to the pi4?
I certainly would need something more than this, correct?

Maybe something like this would work?

Second, I tried that EXACT regulator (second link - DROK). Works pretty good and it kept the output very clean even with the spikes from the starter at start-up. The biggest issue i had with it was that the USB output is set to OFF whenever you power it up. Normally that wouldn't matter much (if you were to leave the converter on ALL the time), but even with NO load on the converter it was drawing near 50 miliamps @ 12V input (not ideal if you leave you're car off for long periods of time). I didn't want to have to worry about my battery dying, and I definitely didn't want to have to manually turn on the USB output EVERY time I turned the car on. If you are going to only use the screw terminal output, and not the USB output (sounds like that's you'll be feeding the Raspi from the screen) you will be fine as long as you hook the converter up the an ignition line.
Otherwise, if I were you, i'd try something like this https://www.amazon.com/Voltage-Stabilizer-Protector-Regulator-DC10-36V/dp/B06Y5JHZG2/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=12v+dc+regulator&qid=1588101373&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyVkpFUTBOSEhCSjZVJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTA4MzMzMjRRNk1LUFQyNDhJNSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNTM3NjAwWE1WT1lLTzk5WEZUJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
