Click on the COG, Open the system settings, and set the projection orientation (90 degrees for me).
ALSO for this to work, you need to go to Android auto settings and disable "Show Top Bar in Android Auto" (I think this is a bug.)
And for anyone reading this and using the same display, 1080p on a 5.5" display is almost unusable, so lowered the projection down to 480p.
Root cause of all those issues is a bug in Raspberry PI FKMS driver that does not apply rotation and overscan settings for hardware accelerated H264 layer. Settings for the rotation are just workaround. What exactly does not work when you set rotation to 90 degrees with visible TopBar?
Bluewave, Thanks for the workaround tho, thought I had an expensive paperweight Do we need to do a bug report or star one on the driver from PI somewhere?
The visible top bar prevents the rotation. With visible top bar enabled.. the AA is in the correct aspect ratio, but stuck in the standard orientation. With the visible top bar disabled the AA is correct aspect ration AND rotated as per configured orientation.
It was already reported by other users once Buster has been released. There was no interest in fixing this as PI foundation wants stick to the KMS standard. It should be fixed in the firmware but Broadcom is not interested to fix it as well. We tested 90 degrees rotation with official PI screen and everything worked as expected. What screen do yo use exactly? Does it have portrait orientation by default (that may explain the issue)?
