I honestly seem to get better general reception (picks up more stations) from the SDR dongle I'm using. The RDS capability of the Sundtek dongle may be superior and you do get stereo sound. I'm leaning toward using the SDR dongle for my project at this point. I may try developing a similar application/interface for the Sundtek as I did for the SDR dongle, but I'm not sure how soon that will be.
You have both an SDR and also the Sundtek dongle correct?
I'm trying to decide which route to go, and was curious if you had to choose. Would you buy again the Sundtek, or stick with the SDR?
I really like the idea of the Sundtek, but their support seems to be really lacking and I'm not sure if they are even doing anything with it. I haven't seen them answer any questions about this product on their forums for awhile now.
Sundtek dongle:

Good RDS functionality
Decent auto-scanning functionality
SDR Dongle with rtl_fm backend:
Higher CPU usage
Decent application
Mono sound support
Decent RDS functionality
No auto-scanning functionality
SDR Dongle with rtl_fm_streamer backend:
Higher CPU usage
Decent application
Stereo sound support
No RDS functionality (yet)
Not sure about quality of auto-scanning functionality
